My Polaris PB4-60 booster pump stopped starting (I can get it started by spinning the shaft and flipping the power), so I believe the Starting Capacitor may be the problem. There is one capacitor located externally on top in it's own housing, but that one seems to be good (I replaced that one, but still doesn't start).

My Polaris 280's booster pump has started making a noise like a cat in a blender, so I've turned it off while considering my options. The pool guy can replace the pump for $300 plus $140 labor. Or, I can buy something like an Aquabot Turbo T-Jet for about $600, and sell the 280.

A new motor is about $130, a new Hayward booster pump is $165 complete ( I don't know how good their Booster motors are).

There are 3 windings in the motor. 1 start winding and 2 run windings. The capacitor is in series with the start winding.
